When will we know the truth about Labour's decision to invade Iraq?

22 Jan 2015

On Tuesday 18 March 2003 Rugby's then Labour MP, Andy King, joined with the majority of his party and the majority of the tory party and voted in favour of the invasion of Iraq.

All 53 Liberal Democrat MPs voted against, as did the SNP and Plaid Cymru members of parliament together with a handful of labour and tory rebels including notably Robin Cook (Lab) who honourably resigned as Foreign Secretary to vote against the war and former Chancellor of the Exchequer Ken Clarke (Con).

We now know a lot that we did not know then. For instance we now know:

a) That as well as the "sexed up" intelligent dossier which said there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq there was another intelligence report which said that an invasion would provoke anti-Western extremist violence.

b) That the cabinet did not ask to see a legal opinion from the Attorney General on whether it was lawful for the United Kingdom to invade Iraq.

c) That there was no plan to reconstruct Iraq after the invasion.

Who knows what else we don't know about Labour's decision to go to war. Sir John Chilcott has delayed, yet again, publishing the official report into the war.

If you want to add your name to the protest about the twelve year delay in giving the British people the truth about the war log on to http://www.libdems.org.uk/ and add your name to the petition.
