The Liberal Democrats on Rugby Borough Council believe that the Conservative led administration should call a halt to their decision to scrap Green bin collections of food and garden waste over Christmas.

The decision to suspend the Green bin service from Christmas 2016 with the intention to reintroduce the service in March 2017 was agreed by the Conservative Cabinet at Rugby Borough Council at a meeting on Monday 3 October 2016.

Commenting, Cllr Jerry Roodhouse Leader of the Rugby Lib Dems Group on Rugby Council, said:

"The report to Cabinet suggested a cross party working group but it seems like the decision to stop Green bins at Christmas has already been made by the Tories. The Lib Dems are asking what will happen to extra food and garden waste over this period. We do not want people's Christmas spirit spoilt by worrying about their rubbish. We think the decision should go to a Scrutiny Committee where all the options can be considered thoroughly. It's clear that the Tories have rushed to cut a service that people like and the question has to be asked why now?"
