Rugby’s voice. Rugby’s services. Rugby’s future.

Rugby’s voice. Rugby’s services. Rugby’s future.

Local government in Warwickshire is going through its biggest change in generations.

The Government has decided that Warwickshire’s six existing councils should be replaced by two new unitary authorities, subject to parliamentary approval. Rugby would become part of a new authority alongside North Warwickshire and Nuneaton and Bedworth.

This means one new council would eventually become responsible for services currently divided between Rugby Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council.

Throughout this process, Rugby Liberal Democrats will continue standing up for our town, its communities and its residents.

Our priorities for Rugby

We want to ensure that:

  • Rugby has a strong and visible voice within the new authority.
  • Local services remain accessible and responsive.
  • Rugby receives fair representation and a fair share of funding.
  • Staff and residents are kept properly informed during the transition.
  • Important local assets are protected.
  • Decisions are made as close to local communities as possible.
  • Proposals for a Rugby Town Council are properly considered and shaped by residents.

The transition must be carefully managed so that vital services—such as social care, highways, housing, planning and waste collection—continue without unnecessary disruption. Many important details still need to be settled, including the new council’s name, governance arrangements, electoral representation, service structures and the future role of a Rugby Town Council. We will work constructively with other political groups and councils where that benefits Rugby. But we will also speak up clearly whenever Rugby’s identity, services or interests need protecting. This is not about political point-scoring. It is about making sure Rugby gets the best possible outcome from a change that will affect local government for many years to come.

The Council has established a new committee called the “Rugby Future Governance” chaired by Cllr Jerry Roodhouse  Link to RBC

Help us stand up for Rugby

We want to hear from residents, community organisations, businesses and council staff.

What services matter most to you? What should a Rugby Town Council do? How can we make sure Rugby’s voice is heard in the new authority?
