Rugby Borough Council must take the lead on reducing plastic waste says Cllr Tim Douglas

Councillor Tim Douglas (Paddox Ward) has written to the local papers about the need for Rugby Borough Council to take the lead on reducing plastic waste and help improve our environment.

Dear Editor,

Last week the European Parliament voted for an extensive ban on single-use plastic to stop pollution entering the world's oceans. The UK Government has announced plans to ban plastic straws, drink stirrers and cotton buds in a bid to "turn the tide on plastic pollution". But action needs to be taken at a local level too. I proposed a motion in February to ensure Rugby Borough Council does more to reduce single use plastic waste within the authority, adopt the Waste and Resources Action Programme and engage more with local environmental groups, businesses and residents to cut their plastic waste - we all have our bit to do. I urge the Council to take the lead on reducing plastic waste and help improve our environment; the costs of turning a blind eye to this issue are too high.

Yours sincerely,

Cllr Tim Douglas
