Local Recycling Centres to Go

Fly Tipping at Local Recycling Centre

A recent review of all the recycling 'bring sites' in the Borough has led to a recommendation going to the Council, which calls for all these sites to be closed by the end of September.

This has been brought about by the County Council deciding to change its main contract for waste disposal. Instead of being taken to Ling Hall Landfill Site in Rugby, the waste is going to the Whitley Incinerator in Coventry. As a result the cost of disposal of Rugby Borough Council's waste has increased significantly because the distance the vehicles now have to travel to dispose of our non-recyclable waste is much greater.

Another reason given for closing the 'bring sites' is the increased levels of contamination of recyclable materials with non-recyclable materials and the fly tipping at the sites. These materials, which cannot be recycled, are costing the Council over £20,000 a year to collect and dispose of and significantly increase the amount of waste sent for incineration.

Another factor in the decision to close the 'bring sites' is that due to the success of the Council's door to door recycling collections the amount of recyclable material collected at the bring sites has dropped significantly.

At the Cabinet meeting where this decision was made Rugby Liberal Democrats called for certain assurances from the Leader of the Council. These included that the Council will ensure education on recycling continues, there should be closer monitoring of fly tipping to ensure that local residents are getting value for their Council Tax and that everyone is able to recycle.

Hunters Lane and any privately operated recycling 'bring sites' will not be affected by the decision and will continue to accept all the usual items for recycling or disposal. Residents are urged not to dump materials at the 'bring sites' once they are closed. Anyone requiring additional recycling capacity can ring 01788 533332 or visit the Borough Council's website for more information about obtaining extra recycling bins.
