Elections 2026 or Not ?
Should Borough Council elections go ahead in 2026
Should they take place
Rugby Borough Council elects in thirds, so the whole Council is not up for election. Rugby is made up of 42 Cllrs a third means we have 14 Cllrs up for election in 2026 out of that 42 would stopping them reduce democracy? of course Reform wants them and the Conservatives.
The Government will announce over the summer its preferred choice for a new unitary authority with shadow elections taking place for that authority in 2027, in between all of this the Council Chief Executive will receive extra guidance about the process and also an order will be placed in the House of Commons on spending controls. That work has already started and the cross party group of Councillors Conservative, Labour & Liberal Democrats are sighted on this work including a Governance review to establish a Rugby Town Council along with reviewing Parish Councils, Houlton has just lodged a petition to create a Parish Council creating extra work, this work is normally run through the elections office as they have the data but also capacity is tight.
WHAT DO YOU THINK the Council has to respond by January 15th
