Eastlands Councillors thank local groups for help securing Great Central Walk funding
Rugby Lib Dem Eastlands Ward Councillors Neil Sandison, Sue Roodhouse and Dale Keeling thank local groups and welcome a new funding grant from Veolia Environmental Trust for £52,000 that will go towards repairing part of the track bed on the Great Central Walk to overcome flooding problems by the Pytchley Road Bridge.
The track is a favourite for walkers, riders and nature lovers. The drainage channels and track bed need raising as the area is now in desperate need of repair. Rugby Lib Dems Eastlands Councillors supported the bid and worked with local groups in Rugby who were instrumental in ensuring that the application was successful.
Commenting, Cllr Neil Sandison, said:
"As the Ward Councillor and a local resident in the area I regularly use this part of the Great Central Walk. I believe it really was down to local community support from groups like Warwickshire Wildlife Volunteers, Sustainable Rugby, Rugby Disability Forum and Sustrans through the Rugby Cycle Users Forum all of whom sent in letters of support to the Council's bid. Particular thanks go to the Open Space Team at the Council who drafted and processed the application."
Fellow Ward Councillor, Dale Keeling, added:
"I would like to thank all those involved including local residents that have shown support for the campaign online via the Save the Great Central Way Facebook page which continues to highlight the issue of flooding on the Great Central Way. The grant is a good start in upgrading this 2.9 mile stretch of recreational space to save the Great Central Walk for residents.I hope we can look at further bids in the coming months to keep this walk accessible for everyone."
