A New Chapter for Rugby – Liberal Democrats Will Stand Up for Our Town
Liberal Democrats Will Stand Up for Our Town
The Government has now confirmed that Rugby Borough Council will become part of a new unitary authority alongside North Warwickshire and Nuneaton & Bedworth. While this marks the end of Rugby Borough Council as we know it, it is also the beginning of a new chapter for our town.
For Rugby Liberal Democrats, our priority is clear: to make sure Rugby has a strong, independent voice in the new authority and secures a fair deal for our residents.
The first elections to the new Shadow Unitary Council are expected in 2027. These elections will shape how the new council is created, how services are delivered, and how investment is shared across the whole area for many years to come. It is vital that Rugby is strongly represented around the decision-making table.
Over recent months we have already taken positive steps to prepare. We have established a Cross Party Rugby Future Governance Committee, this committee will meet in public where possible and bringing together political groups to develop policies, campaign priorities and proposals that put Rugby first. Our focus is on protecting local services, supporting our town centre, investing in communities and ensuring Rugby receives its fair share of funding and opportunities. It will be Chaired by Cllr Jerry Roodhouse
Alongside this work, we continue to explore the creation of a Rugby Town Council. A Town Council could provide a strong local voice, protect community identity, and take responsibility for services and facilities that matter most to residents. As local government changes, we believe it is important that decisions affecting Rugby remain as close to local people as possible.
The new unitary authority will bring both opportunities and challenges. Success will depend on ensuring that Rugby is not overlooked and that resources are allocated fairly across all communities.
That is why Rugby Liberal Democrats will continue to work constructively with residents, businesses, community organisations and other public bodies. We will challenge decisions when necessary, but we will also bring forward practical ideas and positive solutions that benefit our town.
The future of Rugby should not simply be decided elsewhere. It should be shaped by the people who live and work here.
As we prepare for the 2027 elections, we are looking for residents who want to get involved, share ideas, campaign with us, or even consider standing as Liberal Democrat candidates. Together, we can ensure that Rugby has a strong voice, a fair deal, and a bright future within the new authority.
Get involved: If you care about Rugby's future and want to help shape the next chapter for our town, we'd love to hear from you. Whether you can volunteer, deliver leaflets, join the conversation or stand as a candidate, together we can ensure Rugby's voice is heard. hello@rugbylibdems.org.uk
